Dealing with the deep rough is something every golfer must overcome if they are going to play better golf in 2025. The good news is that there are several simple things you can do to increase your chances of getting out of trouble. And what about one of the unluckiest moments in golf (of which there are many!)? When you hit a good shot and find your ball resting in a divot on the fairway? Fear not. Read on below and watch these expert tutorials to help you on your way.
Play better golf: Navigating the deep rough
What’s the first rule when dealing with a ball that’s lying in deep, wet rough? Lower your expectations! Be pragmatic about your end-result then take practical steps to increase the probability of a good outcome. Clear the site of leaves and debris; select a more lofted club; grip down on the shaft and put the ball back in your stance to increase your angle of attack. But above all, make sure you hit the ball first – that’s the real key here.
Play better golf: Playing out of a divot
Similar rules apply to playing out of a divot as to dealing with a ball in the deep rough. Give yourself more of a chance by selecting a more lofted club. Take steps to steepen your downswing by gripping down on the club and playing the ball back in your stance. Above all, look to hit the ball first with the objective of creating a fresh divot after the ball.
