A personal plan to play better golf in 2025
The end of 2024 came with one last surprise and several reasons to remain hopeful I can play better golf in 2025…
Curiously enough 2024 ended on a bit of high.
Despite some good early results, my new ‘carefree’ attitude to golf (see previous blog) lasted less than a month in the end before I reverted to type and recorded one of my worst rounds of the year in a Pro-Am competition in early December. Trying far too hard in golf usually equals poor results – and I didn’t disappoint on that score.
Following repeated apologies to my teammates (all much more accomplished golfers) and even an offer to return my share of the fourth-place prize (for which I’d literally done nothing to deserve a part of), I decided to down golfing tools on the course for the rest of 2024 and concentrate on some basic fitness and home practice.
Two weeks passed then an impromptu opportunity to enjoy nine holes of golf with my son (who was back from university) took me out on the course again. With no real warm-up and three token swishes of the club on the first tee, I proceeded to make a best of the year (by some margin!) 37 (two over par!!) for the front nine holes. Nothing crazy just steady, uncomplicated golf. After a year full of hope and lots of effort to improve, it was this relaxed, ‘in the moment’ attitude that helped me end the year on a very pleased but bemused high.
Play better golf
But was it all to do with what’s between my ears? Reflecting on the above since I can see that my state of mind is certainly one major contributing factor to help me play better golf. Regular skills practice is another. And so too is having the right physical capability, strength and stamina to play is yet another necessary component.
I’m now six weeks into my homemade DIY improvement plan to play better golf that involves a bit of exercise, flexibility and gym training, together with some concerted weekly putting, short and long game practice. I happily (some might say ‘sadly’) tick a small box on my planning sheet each time I do one of these things.
The result has been to build confidence and excitement that I’m doing the right things. I can see a tick-list of effort, hopefully often enough to expect some form of golf improvement. What that might look like is, as always, wholly unclear but I know I will have a lot of fun finding out.
This may well be the last of my self-indulgent very amateur golf blogs for a while until I have something substantial to report on the play better golf front (so, as I said, it may be a while)!
But for now, to all unknown golfers everywhere, I wish you the very best for a very happy, healthy and exciting golfing 2025.
Roll on the next time 🙂
